Fantasy Faire 2016: Why I Relay

Snapshot_011

My grandfather was the best person I’ve ever known. Looking at him from an adult perspective, I can see the little flaws that a little girl doesn’t notice in her hero, but even now, I admire him so much. With a kind word and a peppermint, he could fix anything from a skinned knee to a broken heart. No matter what you needed, you could go to him and he would help you find a solution. He taught me to ride a bike, he helped me apply to college, he held my hand when specialists told me I was sick. His cancer was so much scarier than mine.

I always thought he was indestructible, you see. He’d gone to war, moved to new continents, raised several children and buried one. He beat back one cancer, survived a near fatal car crash, and kept going with barely a hitch when glaucoma rendered him nearly blind. Through it all, he had a smile handy and a pocket full of sweets. So when they said he had cancer again, I was worried, but I wasn’t afraid. He was invincible. They would do surgery, he would have treatment, everything would be fine. And then it wasn’t.

He passed away just before his ninety-fifth birthday. I still miss him every day. He is why I relay. Because cancer is a thief. It steals memories, not just from the ill but from the people who love them. It steals the possibility of what might have been. It steals time, and we have so little to begin with.

My grandfather will never walk me down the aisle. My nephews will never know him as anything more than a picture on the wall. He will never come home to my grandmother again or sit on the porch and nap in his rocking chair.

It’s the little things that make a life, and they’re worth fighting for.

I love to decorate, but today, I just wanted to have fun with it, and this happened. I really don’t get to use these Organica erosion pieces enough. They’re so great. I’m absolutely awful at terraforming and even I can use them!

Really. I once put a quarter sim underwater trying to dig a river. So bad.

Anyway. Some of this is new, some is less new, some is not quite out yet. Details in the credits, since I have to go buy a dress suitable for an RL wedding reception instead of extending play time. Happy shopping!

Just know you’re not alone

I had considerably more fun at Gacha Garden than anticipated. This round has so much great stuff, I actually can’t show everything I got in one post. You’re definitely going to want to go down there after it opens tomorrow. Not everything here is from the event, though! Don’t worry, it’ll all be labeled below.

As I’m trying to write this post, I’m also in a Steam IM, trying to explain SL in general to my friend, Frank. Everything he knows about it comes from my chattering or from random youtube videos, so you can imagine the ideas he has about our little world. I’m trying to point him to better material, but the guy trolling people at safe hubs has been more entertaining for him, thus far.

Hopefully, I will be able to come up with something that paints us in a better light, but also keeps his attention for more than three seconds. Maybe I will teach him about shopping in SL! After all, who doesn’t love a little virtual retail therapy?

But you know legends never die

A friend of mine is trying to get me to come back to a roleplay I used to be in. I’m not completely sold on the idea, but I do like to dress up, so I slipped into character to see how she feels. I have to admit, I do miss being that person. I don’t really know that I have the time to commit to it, though, and I would hate to let him down. Still, it is good to be queen from time to time. Even if I don’t get to behead anyone!

In the snowfall

Snapshot_004

If you’re friends with me on plurk, then you know how desperately I want snow. Instead, we seem to be plagued with routine thunderstorms. Don’t get me wrong, I like rain, possibly more than a sane person should. I just really hate mud. Since I have no control over the RL weather, I indulged myself inworld!

Initially, I wanted to find a pretty spot someone else had decorated, but there is one big problem with on-location pictures: people. Specifically annoying people who can see that you’re trying to take a picture and purposely get in the way. There just isn’t enough derender. You know where there are no people? My build space! So I made a bit of winter wonderland for myself. It’s my current happy place.

Oh, and if you’re looking for something fun to do in your winter wonderland, go pick up this snowball from RC. It has a little AO built into it and it is seriously adorable. I think I spent ten minutes just watching myself go through the stand animations!
